Rules for changing active voice to passive voice

Introduction

There are two types of voices in the English language. They are Active voice and Passive voice.

We need to use them for various purposes but changing active voice sentence into passive voice is a very tricky skill.

We will see all the necessary rules for changing active voice sentences into passive voice sentences.

What are active voice and passive voice?

Basically, we can say in simple words that an active voice sentence begins with a subject and a passive voice sentence begins with the object.

In active voice, the verb changes as per the subject of the sentence, and in passive voice verb changes as per the object of the sentence.

Rules for changing active voice sentence into passive voice

Rule number 1)Begin the sentence with an object instead of the subject.

Rule number 2) Then use the helping verb as per the number of object and tense of the sentence.

The list of tenses and helping verbs in passive voice is as follows.

1)Simple present tense-am/is/are

2)Present continuous tense-am/is/are+being

3)Present perfect tense-have/has+been

4)Simple past tense-was/were

5)Past continuous tense-was/were+ being

6) Past perfect tense-had+ been

7)Simple future tense-will/shall+ be

8) Future perfect tense-will/shall+ have+ been

Note- present perfect continuous tense, past perfect continuous tense, future perfect continuous tense, and future continuous tenses are not changed into passive voice and any sentence with the intransitive verb which does not need an object is not changed into passive voice.

Rule number 3) After the helping verb use v3 (Past participle) of the main verb.

Rule number 4) After that use by+ agent(Subject). In passive voice, the subject is always written in the objective case.

The list of the nominative case(Subject) and the objective case is as follows.

Nominative case —objective case

1)I -me

2)We -us

3)You (singular) -you

4) You (Plural) -you

5)They -them

6) He -him

7) She -her

8) It -it

9)Singular noun – same singular noun

10) Plural noun -same plural noun

These are the most important rules for changing active voice sentences into passive voice sentences.

Conclusion-

From the above discussion, we can conclude that there are four rules to change active voice into passive voice. First, begin the sentence with the object then use the helping verb as per tense and number of the object after that use v3 which is the past participle of the main verb, and then use by+ agent Subject of active voice sentence)
