Introduction
Question tags are very important in our spoken and written English. Using a correct tag question is a very handy skill. Every English speaker must have it.
But the rules for forming question tags are a bit complicated and confusing. So we will see all the details like what is question tag, the rules for making a question tag, and exceptions for the rules.
So here we will see all the details related to framing correct question tags.
What is a question tag?
When we make affirmative or negative sentences and ask a short question to the listener for a positive or negative response, we make a question tag using a helping(Auxiliary) verb and suitable pronoun.
Examples-
1)He is a good student, isn’t he?
Here isn’t he is a question tag
2)They were busy, weren’t they?
3)John will come soon, won’t he?
These are some of the examples to give you a basic idea of what is question tag.
How to write question tag correctly
Sometimes we tend to commit mistakes in the writing of question tags. The correct way of writing the question tag is first write the given sentence then give a comma at the end of it then write a question formed by helping verb and pronoun. If it is negative then write the short form of not as n’t such as isn’t wasn’t, can’t, won’t(Will not), haven’t, etc.

All the rules for making question tags in English with a detailed explanation.
Rule no.1)The question tag is prepared using helping verbs like am, is, are, was, were, have, has, had, will, shall, do, does, did, or modals like can, could, may, might, must, should, would and pronouns like I, we, you, he, she, it, they.
If there is no helping verb in the sentences such as simple present affirmative and simple past affirmative, then we use do/does/did as per the tense and subject of the sentence.
If there is no above-mentioned pronoun and there is a singular or plural noun then use he/she/it/they as per the number and gender of the subject.
I)If there is v1 in the sentence, then use do as a helping verb for forming a question tag.
Eg.1)I ask questions.
Answer-I ask questions, don’t I?
2)you sing songs, don’t you?
3)She looks tired, doesn’t she?
II) The Third example is different as we have used does as a helping verb as the next rule states that if there is he/she/it/singular noun as a subject, use s/es with the main verb and when there is s/es as the suffix to the main verb in a simple present tense sentence, then use does as helping verb for making question tags.
In short, if there is v1+s/es then use does for making question tags.
Eg.1)It performs nicely, doesn’t it?
2)He runs races, doesn’t he?
3)John finds broken things, doesn’t he?
III)If there is v2(Simple past tense affirmative sentence)Then use did for making question tag.
Eg. 1)We planted many trees, didn’t we?
2)He searched everywhere, didn’t he?
3)People gathered there, didn’t they?
IV)If there is no pronoun as the subject of the sentence, then use he/she/it/they as per the number and gender of the sentence.
Eg. 1)Rita takes a decision, doesn’t she?
2)Trees give us fruits, don’t they?
3)children are playing in the garden, aren’t they?
4)It rained yesterday, didn’t it?
Rule no.2) Question tag of the affirmative sentence is negative and the question tag of the negative sentence is affirmative.
Eg. 1)He has finished his work, hasn’t he? (Affirmative sentence-negative question tag)
2)He has not finished his work, has he? (Negative sentence-affirmative question tag.
Rule no.3) Question tag of an imperative sentence is always will you
Eg. 1)Open the door, will you?
2)Don’t be anxious, will you?
3)Please help me, will you?
4)Take this with you, will you?
Rule no.4) Question tag of the sentences beginning with let’s is shall we
Eg. 1)Let’s play now, shall we?
2)Let’s do this, shall we?
3)Let’s ask, shall we?
Rule no.5)If the subject is there is or there are, use there in question tag also.
Eg. 1)There are many trees, aren’t there?
2)There is a tree, isn’t there?
Rule no.6)If the subject is this/that is/was then use IT as a pronoun.
Eg. 1)This is a good idea, isn’t it?
2)That is a nice place, isn’t it?
Rule no.7) Exceptional question tag of I am and I am not sentence.(Aren’t I and am I )
Eg. 1)I am a teacher, aren’t I?
2)I am not a teacher, am I?
Note- what is the question tag of “I am a student”
It is a very common question regarding affirmative and negative sentences’ question tags when there is I am or I am not
Simply the question tag of I am sentences should be am not I? but it is an exception and the question tag of I am affirmative sentence is aren’t I?
The question tag of I am a student is as follows.
I am a student, aren’t I?
Rule 8)Question tag of have to/ has to is mustn’t
