How to use helping verbs correctly with basic 10 types of subjects in English.

Introduction

It is very tricky to remember all the helping verbs in present, past and future tenses and their correct use with 10 basic subjects in active and passive voice.  They are as follows:

  1. I
  2. We
  3. You(singular)
  4. You(plural)
  5. They
  6. Plural nouns (All plural nouns in the world like men, women, children, students etc.
  7. He
  8. She
  9. It
  10. Singular nouns (All singular nouns in the world of the English language like man, woman, child, student, John, Rita, etc.

Here is the list of all the helping (Auxiliary) verbs in the English language

Generally, we use will with all the subjects in normal sentences.

  9. It-will
  10. Singular noun (All singular nouns man, woman, child, student, John, Rita-will

But we use shall as I-SHALL and WE-SHALL when there is less certainty-

e.g. a) I will become a doctor (100% sure)

b) I shall become a doctor (50-50%)

Also, we use shall with I and WE when we want to suggest something or ask somebody for an opinion or offer to do something.

e.g. a) Shall we hire a taxi? (suggestion)

b) Shall I buy this dress? (ask somebody for an opinion)

c)Shall I do this for you? (offer)

6)Use of modals with 10 basic subjects

Modals are such a kind of verbs that are not affected by singular/plural or gender of the subject. So we can use any modal with all the subjects including singular and plural subjects.
