It is said that Lord Rama the incarnation of Lord Vishnu returned to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and won the battle against the demon king, Ravan, to free his abducted wife Goddess Sita. This is the significance of the celebration of the Diwali festival. Diwali has been celebrated in India since ancient times around 4 to 5 thousand years.

Diwali is the longest festival as it lasts for 5 days. It generally occurs in October or November month and the Hindu Month of Kartik. Five days of Diwali include

On padwa, the wife performs Aukshan(A kind of worship) of her husband and the fifth day of Diwali is Bhaubij which marks the selfless love between brothers and sisters.

In this way, the five days of Diwali are celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm. People start the preparation for this festival a month ago. They clean and paint their houses. Buy gifts and new clothes and gadgets. Children prepare clay forts and sky lanterns for hanging above homes.

Different kinds of sweets like Laddoos, Chuwada, shankarpali, and karanjis are prepared and along with eaten by families, and gifted to friends and relatives. People decorate houses with lights, lamps, flowers, and many other decorative items.

Students have Diwali holidays after finishing their half academic year and they enjoy this festival very much by eating sweets, bursting firecrackers, and wearing new clothes. They get an opportunity to visit their friends and relatives and play a lot of games.

Diwali has religious importance. It is an age-old tradition to light lamps and worship Goddess Laxmi. Merchants worship their account books and people buy new things on the auspicious occasion of Diwali like cars, houses, mobiles, and laptops.

Diwali is also important from the point of view of health. Diwali comes in the winter season and our body needs more calories to fight the cold season. Diwali sweets make us ready for it. Farmers have just finished their harvest season and they happily celebrate Diwali to mark the joy of good yield.

I just love this Diwali festival of lights. It makes all people happy and brings the joy of hope and happiness and increases social bonding and brotherhood. People of all religions celebrate this festival and it contributes to the religious and communal harmony in our country as well as the whole world.
